Cygnet Theatre Celebrates Ten Years With A Robust and Riveting 2012/2013 Season

Last week, Cygnet Theatre announced five of the six shows in their upcoming 2012-2013 Season. From Sondheim’s dark exploration of the American Dream to a noble knight who has an “Impossible” dream of his own, Cygnet’s diverse lineup has something for everyone. But the common thread that ties these shows together is the company’s focus on productions that make for exciting and engaging evenings of live theatre. Without further ado, here is the (almost) complete lineup:

Cygnet's 10th Anniversary Season:

Man of La Mancha (July 5-August 26, 2012): Cygnet Artistic Director Sean Murray once again tackles the leading role of Miguel de Cervantes, a failed author, soldier, and tax collector who, while awaiting trial by the Spanish Inquisition, recounts the epic tale of the fierce horseback-riding hero Don Quixote. With a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion, and music by Mitch Leigh, “La Mancha” is one of the most enduring works of the musical theatre canon.

Mistakes Were Made (September 20-October 21, 2012): Veteran actor Phil Johnson takes the stage in the West Coast Premiere of this hilarious, fast-paced play which follows the side-splitting antics of a B-list Off-Broadway producer and his messy quest for success. San Diego Critics Circle Award Winner Shana Wride (“Private Lives”) directs.

A Christmas Carol (November 23-December 30, 2012): Once again, the 1940’s radio actors of “WCYG Theatre of the Air” will delight audiences with a holiday-themed “live radio broadcast,” but this year they will be presenting a new Christmas classic, Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Filled with music, sound effects, and a wide array of treasured characters from the family favorite, “Carol” is hoping to become Cygnet’s new holiday tradition.

TBA (January 24-February 24, 2013): Cygnet is not offering any clues to this “surprising” kick-off to the New Year, so we’ll have to stay tuned …

Assassins (March 14-April 28, 2013): Stephen Sondheim’s uniquely dark and funny musical, which explores the motives of nine individuals who assassinated or attempted to assassinate the President of the United States, gets its first full staging in 2013 after several concert-readings in the past.

Shakespeare’s R & J (May 22-June 16, 2013): Part “Dead Poets Society,” part “Lord of the Flies,” Joe Calarco’s stunning drama takes audiences to a parochial boarding school where four schoolboys discover and reenact Shakespeare’s most famous love story. According to the NY Times, Calarco’s inventive reimagining is “a vibrant, hot-blooded new adaptation of Romeo and Juliet…pulsat(ing) with an adolescent abandon and electricity of which Romeo himself might approve.” San Diego Premiere.
